Green to Colour project in Weert

TreeMania, in cooperation with Jonkers Hoveniers, helps the municipality of Weert manage and optimize biodiversity in its public green spaces. The installed moisture sensors ensure more efficient work and, above all, much less loss of trees.

What is the situation?

Since 2016, the municipality of Weert has very consciously opted for biodiversity in public green spaces. This is reflected in large borders and traffic guides that are planted - with flowery perennials and special trees, among other things. These include magnificent columnar Oriental plane trees and King's lime trees.

Jonkers Hoveniers was involved in planting the trees and borders. To ensure a beautiful streetscape immediately after planting, large trees were chosen. Jonkers Hoveniers has signed a three-year maintenance contract with the municipality of Weert for both the perennials and the trees. During this period, the company is responsible for the success of the planting and relieving the municipality.

In addition to regular maintenance, Jonkers Gardeners replaces any dead plants and trees during this period, waters when necessary, and the company ensures that the nutritional status of the soil is maintained.

How did we help?

Especially for this project, Jonkers Hoveniers entered into a collaboration with TreeMania. By placing sensors that measure soil moisture, Jonkers Hoveniers can remotely read out, for example, the moisture condition in the soil.

The data measured by the sensors can be read not only by Jonkers hoveniers. The municipality of Weert also has access to the dashboard. In this way, Jonkers Hoveniers shows in a transparent way how they shape the maintenance of trees.

The results

We believe in circular management, so we can never really speak of an end result. The process of green management is always ongoing.

Nevertheless, we can note the following results:

No trees have fallen out since using our moisture sensors and dashboard; Perhaps something more specific: the moment of watering can be determined more accurately, making the maintenance of the trees more efficient than before. The communication and transparency between the manager (Jonkers Hoveniers) and the municipality of Weert have been enhanced by the dashboard.

"The sensors at the trees help us determine even better when the trees need water. This allows us to determine the watering more accurately, which means that no trees have fallen out and we can do our work more efficiently."
